Sheheen comes to Greenwood

As the June 2010 primaries inch closer to reality, candidates for various state- and national-level offices are beginning to ramp up their campaigning efforts.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen is among their number.

Sheheen, a state senator who represents Kershaw, Chesterfield and Lancaster counties, stopped in Greenwood Tuesday evening for a reception at Orde’s of England. A number of notable locals were listed as hosts of Sheheen’s Tuesday event, including former state Sen. John Drummond, state Sen. Floyd Nicholson, Greenwood Mayor Welborn Adams, state Rep. Paul Agnew and more.

Sheheen talked about, as he runs for governor, the importance of getting to know people in towns, like Greenwood, which are well outside his senate district.

“I think it is critically important,” Sheheen said. “I was in Laurens a couple of weeks ago and will be back in Laurens this weekend. I was in Seneca last weekend. I was in Greenville and Spartanburg this past weekend. I am making a concerted effort to really reach out across the state. I think part of our problem in the past is that we have focused only on a few areas in the state. So, I’m bringing my message, but I’m also learning about what concerns are out there and what needs are out there.”

Sheheen said employment continues to be a hot topic at each of the stops he makes.
