Sheheen Announces Run for Governor

Columbia, SC (WLTX)

State Senator Vincent Sheheen stopped by WLTX Studios Wednesday during his tour to announce his run for the Palmetto State's top spot.

Sheheen, a Democrat from Camden, currently represents the 27th District, a seat he has held since 2004.

He unveiled an economic development plan for South Carolina Wednesday that he says focuses on what worked in the past and what can work for the future for South Carolina.

Sheheen says he wants the state to re-invest in higher education, while ensuring that Charleston's port system is run in the most professional manner.

Sheheen is also proposing a "Small Business Division" to be added to the Chamber of Commerce.

"Small business is a tremendous generator of jobs," Sheheen said, "I think we need to look at what sectors of the economy can South Carolina take advantage of that are new. Alternative energy is a tremendous sector for potential in this state."

Sheheen said that biofuels, hydrogen technology and wind energy were all areas of alternative energy that South Carolina could use to create jobs. He says the next governor, on the first day of their office, should appoint a professional to head the Economic Development office.

Sheheen said that South Carolina's reputation for scandal has hindered business opportunities abroad, and he hopes the next governor brings responsibility and leadership to the office.

He has been married to his wife Amy for 14 years. His three sons, a third grader and twin eighth graders, attend the public schools of Kershaw County.

"One of the reasons I really love South Carolina is that South Carolina puts a strong value on family," said Sheheen.
