By Vincent Sheheen, Guest Columnist (The State Newspaper)

A decade without leadership has put South Carolina's prosperity in peril.

For almost 10 years, our state has suffered through ineffective state leadership, aggravated by an unwieldy, antiquated government structure. The result has been a lost decade for our beloved state.

By Martin Cahn - Associate Editor, Camden Chronicle-Independent
Camden's Vincent Sheheen spoke to the Chronicle-Independent in September 2008 about the possibility of running for governor in the 2010 election. Then, he said, three things would have to happen for him to actually run: whether or not he felt he could maintain his family obligations -- he is the married father of three boys -- while running a campaign; whether or not he could raise enough money for such a campaign; and if he felt he had enough support from other parts of the state.

Sheheen Announces Run for Governor

Columbia, SC (WLTX)

State Senator Vincent Sheheen stopped by WLTX Studios Wednesday during his tour to announce his run for the Palmetto State's top spot.

Sheheen, a Democrat from Camden, currently represents the 27th District, a seat he has held since 2004.

He unveiled an economic development plan for South Carolina Wednesday that he says focuses on what worked in the past and what can work for the future for South Carolina.

Sheheen says he wants the state to re-invest in higher education, while ensuring that Charleston's port system is run in the most professional manner.

It was a big night for the Laurens Democratic Party as South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Senator Vincent Sheheen made a stop at The Village Cup to meet supporters on Monday.

Sheheen, a Camden native, said his experience in the legislature for the past five years has given him the experience necessary to be governor.

“I’ve had a first hand view of the things that need to be done in South Carolina,” said Sheheen. “I have the energy, commitment level and understanding to bring a new perspective of leadership.”

A Camden favorite son might shine statewide

As Democratic state Sen. Vincent Sheheen strolls around his hometown of Camden, people can't help but call out to him.

"Hey, Vincent!" called a woman on a recent sunny morning as she piled into her car on Camden's Broad Street. "We're pulling for you, honey."

Sheheen, tall and lanky, raised a friendly palm in the air and called a greeting back to the mother of one of his childhood football friends.
