Mudslinging

Vincent just sent the following email in response to comments made today by Payday Lending Lobbyist Dwight Drake:
Laurin --

I don't like mudslinging any more than you do.

It's not the kind of person I am, and it's not the kind of campaign I'm running. I'm tired of the bickering and name-calling in South Carolina politics, but I can't let negative attacks go unanswered. You deserve to know the truth, and others do too. That's why I'm stepping up to address the mudslinging coming from my opponent in the Democratic primary, Dwight Drake.

And I need your help. Join me as a member of our Truth Squad. Mr. Drake's attack today may be the first, but it certainly won't be the last. The Truth Squad will get the latest information to push back on mudslinging and dirty tricks from our opponents.

Government reform is an issue about which I care deeply. I've fought for increased accountability and transparency in government as long as I've served in the General Assembly -- including structural changes that would provide true transparency and accountability at the Employment Security Commission. A year ago, I joined 18 of my Senate colleagues, Republican and Democrat, in requesting an immediate and detailed audit of the Commission’s assets, procedures and management controls. (That report was finally made public earlier this week.) In February of 2009, I authored an op-ed in The State citing my concerns about the Employment Security Commission and arguing for fundamental structural changes that would provide true transparency and accountability.

Mr. Drake's accusations today are baseless and desperate, and, like you, I am disheartened that the mudslinging has begun in this race. You deserve better, and our state deserves better. In order for us to move forward and fulfill South Carolina's promise, we have to be honest with each other and work together -- not attack one another.

Will you join the Truth Squad?

Our current governor drew international attention and ridicule for his lies. We can't afford another four years of a governor who plays fast and loose with the truth.

Thank you,

Vincent

PS - The best way to combat mudslinging is to let our opponents know it won't be tolerated. I hope you'll join the Truth Squad and help set the record straight.

Pee Dee Oyster Roast Recap

Yesterday Vincent ended a full day in Florence with over 200 folks from the Pee Dee. Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela announced his endorsement of Vincent's candidacy and hosted a rollicking oyster roast with tunes from a local bluegrass band. Heat lamps and good old fashioned campaign excitement kept the crowd warm on the cool January evening. Here's a (darkly lit...sorry!) video from the evening. Update with photos to come.

Also, be sure to check out the latest in the news section for local press on Mayor Wukela's endorsement and the event.

Senate Suitemates Story

This morning's edition of The State newspaper featured a front page story about Vincent and his suitemate in the Senate office building, Senator Robert Ford of Charleston.

Ford sees Sheheen as one of the Legislature's dynamic new leaders, bringing to the Senate floor each day a sharp legal mind able to navigate complicated issues from the Bill of Rights to tort reform.

A lifelong bachelor, Ford also greatly respects Sheheen for his family-centered personal life - he's married with three young sons - along with at least one other skill set important to Ford:

"He likes to bring people together. He likes to work with people, both Democrats and Republicans, and he has strong family beliefs."

At the end of a harried day at the General Assembly, Ford said, don't expect to find Sheheen "rubbing shoulders with the lobbyists" at any of the many evening receptions available to lawmakers. "Vince doesn't do that. I don't do it either, but Vince doesn't do it at all.

"He goes straight home to his family," Ford said.

Vincent's op-ed in today's edition of The State

Today the Opinion page of The State newspaper featured an op-ed by Vincent on reforming state government in South Carolina:
Sheheen: Legislative reform key to improving government

The state Senate has a tremendous opportunity today to move our structure of government into the 21st century when a Senate panel takes up the Legislative Reform Act of 2010, S.136.

Under our current structure, state government too often operates on autopilot, with little guidance or review by elected officials who should be the ultimate policy makers. Programs are continued and agencies operate with little oversight or evaluation by legislators or the governor. Along with my co-sponsors, I crafted and introduced this legislation in an effort to modernize our legislative operations so elected leaders can live up to their responsibilities to intelligently and consciously allocate our limited resources toward an effective and functioning state government.

Mayor Joe Riley Joins Team Sheheen

Today at the Historic William Aiken House in Charleston, Mayor Joe Riley announced his support for Vincent's campaign for governor.
"Vincent Sheheen is the kind of dynamic leader we need to get our state back on the right track. He understands the issues that matter in Charleston and all across South Carolina and knows how to bring people together, regardless of political party, to solve problems and move our state forward.

From creating good jobs, improving our public schools, protecting our natural environment, and reforming our tax code, Vincent Sheheen is the leader South Carolina needs now."
